“Walking the Road to Emmaus Today: Sam meets Jesus”

Sam’s powerful story of fame, addiction, and redemption shows how Christ meets us in our deepest search for acceptance.
Watch and Reflect: Encountering Christ on the Margins
This reflection was originally presented by Deacon Robert Kinghorn as part of the National Catholic Broadcasting Council’s Lenten series, 40 Days of Lent – From the Cross to Hope.
In this talk, Deacon Rob reflects on the story of “Sam,” a gifted musician whose search for success, acceptance, and belonging led him through addiction, homelessness, and profound personal struggle.
Through Sam’s journey, we are invited to consider how Christ continues to walk beside those on the margins and how authentic healing often begins through accompaniment, compassion, and hope.
Where is Christ inviting us to recognize his presence in those searching for acceptance, meaning, and hope?
Walking the Road to Emmaus Today
Like the two disciples walking away from Jerusalem in sorrow and confusion, Sam was traveling his own painful road — chasing false promises of fame and belonging.
Christ met him through honest conversation, patient companions, and a deeper call to serve others.
His eyes were opened to the truth that real belonging comes from being known and loved by the One who walks with us always.
Go in Peace and Glorify the Lord by your Life.
